We all knew we were headed for trouble when the regional SCCA club posted a 225 entry limit for the event and there were already 236 registered! The day started cloudy, breezy and fairly comfortable for mid-June in the MetroMess. As we drove down the tunnel and into the infield of Texas Motor Speedway I was a bit intimidated. Once there in the paddock area everyone got their cars ready and tech'ed for the event as the IRL cars practiced on the big banked oval. There was plenty of eye candy in attendance. The most prestigious being the 2004 Ferrari 360. (Only $250K at your friendly Ferrari dealer!)
When we walked the course I was intimidated again by being 'limited' to a course versus a large open parking lot. It would be next to impossible (for most) to get lost on course, but that didn't help matters. The event got underway and in the opening minutes someone in a Camaro spun out in the first slalom and smacked the wall. Not a good omen of things to come. The result of said smack was a rework of that section of course, a longggggg delay and worst of all....everyone getting only 3 runs instead of 4.
The course was 'hot' again and so were we. Luckily fellow Miata pilot, Mark G., was kind enough to set up his canopy trackside. Most all of the Miata pilots were huddled under the canopy like a herd of cows around a mesquite tree in August. During our huddling, there were a few memorable moments. The first would be the trained bear in the red suit driving a cart. The second would be the event worker chief being stressed out beyond your wildest imagination! (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) When it finally came time for the Miata's to run, we were ready to go! POS (fighting off heat stroke from cone chasing) took first place in ES by a large margin. Miata pilots dominated CS (as usual). general default captured top honors, followed by out-of-towner Chris W., lugnutjon in third and altiain rounding it out with 4th. Relative new-comer Ataim took third in the Novice group. onething took second place in Tire class, followed by sammm in third. Lost216 and grand-daughter took top honors in STS2 and STS2L respectively. Mark52 proved once again there's nothing in the trunk by taking first place in CSP. It was a long, hot, humid, error filled, timing problem delayed day that we were all glad to see end. We're all going back in October to do it all over again and can hardly wait! |
