What do you think his parents think?

So an ex-employee of mine just purchased a Lotus Elise. He's in his 20's and still lives at home. His home is an average middle class home, with his parents driving a Red Ranger, and a Camry (I think). He has a good job for someone his age as a network admin.

This weekend he comes by with his new car to show me, unfortunately I wasn't there to see it. But his purchase begs the question, what do his parents think about him buying an exotic car, while they drive crappy boring cars, and make the mortage and all the normal bills associated with life?

Personaly, it would really piss me off if my live-at-home adult child came home with one of these.

I doubt they have any clue what it is besides looking different. But I am sure he mentioned what he pays, and that will slam a fist or two into the EJECT button from his parents. Either way, if you can afford to live on your own, and you are still living at home, you deserve to have your nuts cut off and all "adult" privileges suspended. I just couldn't imagine wanting to stay past 18...I moved out on my 18th B-day..and I couldn't afford it, but I wasn't gonna live in my mom's house anymore!!!

It has 1500 miles on it, so I'd say it was a demo. After seeing the Lotus that went to Discount and landed on it's rear, I'm sure the maintenance is going to eat him alive. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for him, but at the same time, I think he may have bit off more than he can chew.

I have a friend from high school that lived with his parents until he was in his forties. However, most of that time he was the soul bread winner and care provider for his ill parents. He drove an old Ford. After both parents died, he bought another house and a few years latter, got married. He still drives a '66 Galaxy convertible.

That's a pretty long commute from Taiwan to Lewisville if I still lived at home and I don't think TurboDuane would be driving a NC if he owned FedEx ;)

Besides why does everyone care, it's not your money and he's not living at your house. If he's cool with it and his parents are ok with it then what's the big deal. My mom drives a 03 Nissan Murano and my dad a 06 S2000, neither of them care that I drive a semi "exotic" car. Of course they're not paying for the car or my housing either. Maintenance is reasonable, repairs are not and the one that fell off the lift was due to an error of the goodyear shop. They used the wrong jackpoints for a 4 point lift.

Any half decent Elise with a few options and reasonable miles even a used 05 (first year) will still fetch at least 30K. If it's an 06 it's more like mid 30's, and on up to the new 08 s/c. You only live once, if you can afford it and aren't ignoring basic responsibilities I don't see why not. There's no better time to own a 2 seater roadster than in your 20's or in your 50's+ I couldn't wait 30 years.

They are cool with it, my dad went with me to buy it and cosigned on it for me. My family is close and my parents don't mind having me staying with them untill I feel like I make enough money to move out on my own (70k+)

i dont thinks its THAT big of a deal im 22 and live at home with a decently modified miata, and 2006 f150 and a new bike. a 30k dollar car is alot different then a 150k house. why be broke in a crappy house if you can have money in a decent one as long as your parents are a pain in the butt.

I agree with it not being a big deal. I think it mostly depends on the parents. If they are really cool and you can basically just live life normally then I could see staying there. On the other hand I can understand the people that move out on their 18th Bday, because some parents are way controlling. I stayed a little passed that, but I had to watch what I how I behaved there because I had a little brother my parents didnt want me to influence the wrong way.

You think you need $70k+ to live on your own? That's f&^%ed up.

Here's the reality - you're comfortable letting someone else pay for your room and board, because you couldn't afford to live your "thirty-thousandaire" lifestyle if you actually had to pay for your own place.

$20 says the Ranger and Camry still get the garage spots.

Huh? So you're saying that it takes 70K+ to be comfortable supporting yourself. I can honestly say that I, too, would be comfortable with paying my bills if I made that much.

On the other hand, I rather enjoy the pride and sense of independance and accomplishment I get from supporting myself on less than half of that. I am still comfortable with my lifestyle as-is, not to mention happier than I'd be if I lived at the parents' house.

You have no clue what I pay living at my parents house, or how much money i'm currently making. I'm planning on buying a house within the next year or so, and yes I do need around 70k to live the way that I want to on my own.

No, i'm saying 70k is what I need to live comfortable, people have their own place that work at WalMart - but that's not the type of living I personally want for myself. 70k a year is not some unattainable figure for me either, it's something I can get to within a year - to me it's worth waiting till then.

You must be uncomfortable as hell in a Miata then.
