Kirkey Race Seats

I installed a Kirkey aluminum race seat on the passenger side this weekend in order to save a few pounds from the stock seat. What a piece of CRAP! I can't imagine sitting in one of those for any length of time. I had always thought that the MOMO Start seat I'm using for the driver's seat was a cheap imitation of a real seat, but it is light years better than the Kirkey! Not to mention that the Start seat weighed in at 12 lbs. with full upholstery, while the Kirkey weighs 12 lbs. without it's crappy slip-on seat cover. I guess I should be happy that I don't have to sit in the passenger seat, huh.

I assume it's only installed to meet SP requirements?

It's a RACE seat. It's for support and protection, not comfort.

Yup, the low-back kart-type seat I had used previously was outlawed this year. No one ever sat in that seat-I wouldn't let them.

I know. It's just that it is SO uncomfortable and it looks like it could have been built out of 1/4" plywood in a Jr. high wood shop! Doesn't mater, not going to be sitting in it, anyway.

What Kirkey did you buy? I used the Kirkey Delux, which is well contoured, and bought the right size that fit my body. If you are using the boxy economy seat, and/or have the wrong size, they are uncomfortable.

I drove for hours in my Kirkey Delux. It was very comfortable and supportive.

I have the Kirkie intermediate, and yes it is not the most comfortable seat. BUT it is supportive, and you'll not move, unless you want to.

Mark, the Street Prepared rules (similar to STS) require a minimum weight

I went to the post office and weighed the seat and track assembly, figured out how much weight I had to add, and found a metal sales place that cut me a piece to my measurements (rectangular) that met that weight

for about $8

I spent a bunch to save about 16 pounds

There has been quite an uproar about the new (as of this year) rules for seats in SP. This month's Fastrack has an ammended rule up for comment that does away with the weight minimum and gives a little more latitude in the mounting of seats. I could never understand why a minimum weight was deemed a safety improvement. You can certainly have a heavy seat that is unsafe as well as a lightweight seat that is safe. I'm suprised you guys in STS didn't object to the seat restrictions, too (or maybe you did?).

I wasn't in the class when that happened, but I agree that weight doen't necessarily mean appropriate to hold a person safely

and I don't know if people tried to fight it or how hard

I remember in the late 1980s when SP first allowed replacing seats.

people used plastic picnic chairs bolted to the floor that couldn't support anyone on the pass side just to have something they could call a seat

there was a huge flap about safety related to that, so they spent a lot of time trying to describe a "safe" seat

in my case, I had to add roughly 5 pounds to each seat
