Up until it got cool just now, this has been a really intermittent problem (maybe once every couple weeks). Now that it's cooled off, I get a squeal for 10-15 seconds every morning when I start up. Once that's over with, I can go all day without hearing a peep.
Alternator? A/C compressor? Tensioner pulley? What gives?
Loose or old belt?
Check tightness of belt and/or check and see if the belt is stretched.
Been there, done that. Just make sure both belts are tensioned properly. That should fix the squeal, it did for me.
I've never been confident in my ability to properly gauge "moderate thumb pressure @ 22psi" since the day I first met my wife's grandfather and broke a bone shaking his hand.
I recently had the same issue on my '97. Turned out the altenator bracket was missing the adjusting (tension) bolt. This bolt is only held in place by pressure, as it fits in a "U" on the bracket instead of a closed hole, so if it gets loose it easily works its way out. Fortunately it's the same size as the bolt that fits the power stearing tensioner, so I was able to remove it and go find a replacement.
BTW, when that bolt doesn't have tention on it, the altenator will shake, especially during startup, thus causing the slip.
I had the same problem for the last week. Turned out it was a worn power steering, a/c , supercharger belt. It shredded until it was almost gone this morning on the way to work. Luckily I was a few blocks from Black Roadster's house. We removed it this afternoon and got a replacement from O'Reilley's. I figured I got my money's worth out of the old one with 42K miles on it:clap:
