Work pays for my cell phone on some crazy 12 cents a minute plan that supposedly saves them millions of dollars a year company wide. With that in mind, I try to keep personal calls to a minimum on it. Home phone is still cheaper for me.
I thought about going phoneless this time around since everyone calls me on my cell phone, but decided it's always nice to have a land line backup. Besides, it doesn't cost much.
A land line in Frisco will run you at least $40 a month (due to the "metro line" BS).
I have VOIP through CallWithUs and I average about $6/month. We get maybe 1 call a month that's legitimate.... I've contemplated just cutting out the expense :-/
When we switched to VOIP, we changed alarm companies to Smith Thompson. Cheaper, local and they give you the cell monitoring hardware for free.
I don't even miss my home phone. I do not talk on the phone enough to use up my minutes, much less the tons of carry-over. $20/month for a home phone does not sound like much until you consider $240/year. I, personally, can always use an extra $240 each year. It would cover entry fees for an entire season for most AX clubs.
How about this?
Magicjack is a terrible company. Do a couple quick googles on magicjack sucks and you'll find enough info to stay way way far away from them.
We do google voice + a gizmo5 SIP account to use "real" phones at the house. However, our google voice # has a north carolina area code.
We still have a landline, but it is exclusively used for alarm monitoring. We have a handset hooked up to it, but the ringer is off and I haven't used it in years.
Since the wife and I both work from home and are on several conference calls weekly, we have 2 POTS (plain-ol-telephone) lines.
we have two places
in TX we got a "naked" land line with DSL from Alltel (15 miles South of Granbury in the middle of nowhere)
can call 800 and 911 for free, can't call anything else
unlimited incoming calls
only got it for the 800 calling and DSL
in FL, we use our cells and don't have a land line
I retired from GTE/Verizon phone company so I'm a traitor
