If in a hurry, I-40 from Amarillo.
I have done both. I-40 is a much better drive. I-10 seems like you are driving on a treadmill in places.
I've driven both too, and I-10 seemed like the better drive to me - but I was going all the way to Marina del Rey.I-40 looks to be your most direct route, and it's prettier in places - especially going through AZ - but once you hit Needles, you'll think you've landed in hell until you hit Barstow.
Six of one, half-dozen of the other...
I've done both, and I10 seems like it's a lot further just because it is so boring, and more trucks. In summer or winter, I 40 is a bear, weather wise. This time of the year, I would definitely go 287-Amarillo-I40. I did a lot of night driving on the northern route the last time, top down and flying. Very little traffic and fun.
Watch out for speed cameras in AZ! Ask Trickyrix about those.

The upper parts of AZ and NM could get snow in the next few days, according to the weather.
The mountains east of Albuquerque and the Flagstaff area have already had snow closures this year. Better stick to I 10 or watch the weather real close. Carry water!
Just got back. Left 3:40 am Thursday, made my destination 11:35pm California time. On the way back, I had to take a rest break in NM, so it took quite a bit longer. I kept the top down everywhere but Texas, (it was raining in parts of Texas both ways,) and now have a bit of sunburn on my face. Saw two photo units on the way there and one on the way back. AZ had a bunch of non-photo folks out yesterday, though - I saw about five state police checking eastbound between Kingman and Flagstaff on the way back.
