How does an na window break?

Hey everybody, long time no post. Anyways, my mom borrowed my grandmas 90 na and she is now trying to say that she cracked the plastic window. Not sure how she could have done this in 80 degree weather..... Grandma is saying that the miata top is designed that you have to unzip the window every time you put it down. I am calling bs, i never unzipped my top and if i remember correctly, that thing was a PITA to zip and unzip. The window in question is OEM from 90 and is yellowed and kinda nasty looking. The guy she married who uses it as a dd says that it just magically appeared after mom drove it. I was with her when she put the top up for the first time and we immeadiatley saw the crack.
So what do you think dfwmiata? do you think my mom is to blame?

If the window is the yellowed/nasty '90 OEM, it was just time to go... she needed a new one anyway.

You're supposed to either unzip the POS window or fold a foam noodle inside of it when you put it down. Otherwise the window can develop a crease and eventually break. At the very least it'll get scratched all to hell.

Having said that, I got tired of unzipping the plastic window and stopped giving a shit about it altogether after I couldn't see through it. It never cracked, but it looked like hell. And now I have glass. :D

Think about it...you unzip and it lays flat on the package shelf. You don't unzip it and the window is folded in half in the same spot every time. Take the extra 20 seconds and unzip it before you drop the top.

If the top is 19 years old (which I doubt) the window could have cracked just by looking at it.

You should unzip the window to lower the top.
and if you don't, keep the top up when its chilly.
all those with non-glass Streamline Tops, need to be really careful this time of year.

My understanding from grandma is that the top has never been replaced. She does use the hardtop during the winter.
Wow I never once unzipped mine. My ex broke ours one day, it was reallly cold out and she popped the latches and just took off from a toll booth. Gotta love exes.... eh

I guess you learn something new everyday.

Pre-roll bar, I always unzipped the window before lowering the top. Sometimes I would unzipped the window and not lower the top. After installing the roll bar, I don't unzipped the window very often, but I do use some rolled up towels to keep the window from creasing.

Yes, I always unzipped my mom's window on her Miata whenever I would borrow it. If you did'nt, it would crease the window. You can replace the plastic window on the top if the top is in decent condidtion. You can also buy a top off a NB and retrofit it to where you don't have to worry about the plastic window.

I never unzip my NB glass window top... ;)

I can't unzip mine because a replacement rear window was hog ringed in place. i just use a rolled towel, and after almost 2 years of me doing that, plus however long the PO was doing it, it still looks fine-- no crease.

I always unzip before lowering the top. I also have a protector that lays over the plastic to keep the top from rubbing on the window. My first window/top lasted 17 years.
I would also ask your Grandparents to leave the car to YOU!
