Who knows Hondas?? Clutch problems
2003 Honda Element, FWD 5spd. It's got the same 2.4l 4cyl as the Accord, and I believe shares the transmission, linkage, and most of it's engine parts with the RSX and Civic SI.
Anyway, leaving a restaurant tonight in downtown, can't shift into reverse or any other gear...son of a....
Check the clutch fluid and it's obviously low, there's not an auto parts store within 20miles so I decide to limp it home. Good thing I got used to clutchless shifting with all my miata clutch issues. at stoplights, turn key off, put in first, crank engine, after it's going, rev to just the right RPM and drop into the next gear. Probably not the best on the transmission, but cheaper than a tow truck.
Got it home and looking around, I can't see any leaks anywhere in the hydraulic lines at this point. Find the slave cyl and start bleeding it. Bled it completely through a few times, no luck. Seems like the clutch is only disengaging 50 - 75%. On the highway if I gas it and hit the clutch the engine will rev somewhat freely. , but will not shift normally. Car will idle in gear with clutch in and handbrake on but very rough, obviously clutch spinning on the pressure plate, let the clutch out and lunges and sputters, so the clutch is working somewhat, just not disengaging completely.
I'm thinking Master or slave cyl. What has me puzzled is pumping up the pedal, no difference, after I bled it, no difference. It doesn't seem to have air in the lines anymore at least, and If there was a leak somewhere I can't see wouldn't a pressure loss mean a dead pedal? Can slaves or master cylinders go only half bad, and do it without leaking?
I'm thinking tomorrow im going to grab an o'reiley special slave cyl since that seems to be the cheapest thing to try, but I have to get this fixed this weekend, i've only got the Miata as backup, not good for the family.
I don't mind working on the Miata, but i'm terrified of trying to work on a FWD honda. Any tips / suggestions here? Thanks in advance.
