So... how hard are they to install. Any reason not to buy the 949 racing ones? Are the FM ones superior? Anyone want to offer their garage or help install if i do get?

you will spend more on door bars but they will give you way more stiffening and less body flex. it's like having the middle brace and not just the frame rails.

2 reasons why you might want to go with the FM rails:
1) upgradeable... you can't add the butterfly piece to 949 piece
2) no paint/powder-coat to get scratched up... I have the FM rails and they contact speed bumps on a regular basis. Powder coating is strong, but I suspect that dragging against concrete speed bumps will make them look pretty bad over time.

all frame rails do it let you jack up the car from the frame rail and keep them from getting bent on bumps. if you want stiffness and handling door bars are still the best bet or the fm with the middle butterfly add on. only reason to get the cheaper ones i posting is you like your car to wight more and don't care about functionality. i was going to get frame rails at one point tell i started reading and saw they where a waste with out the bull butterfly and or door bars.Quote:

I've had both and a full cage at one point. Door bars and frame rails do the same thing when it comes to stiffening up the car. IMO the frame rails settled the car alot better going over expansion joints and seams in the road. Door bars are a pain with race seats unless you have a quick release steering wheel. I've seen damage from a pulley that actually ripped the door bar from floor and raised it by an inch in the front. It comes down to preference, and suggest you just take a ride in few different setups to see what will suit you best for your intentions.
one thing that worries me about the butterfy is the disclosure on the fm site
"1990-93 cars with stock header and catalytic converters will be a difficult install and may not fit. Please note that the website will not calculate shipping correctly."
My car is a '90 with a stock cat....
Call FM Monday and ask. I'm sure they can answer any question you have about it.
It is just a clearance issue... the X-brace either needs to lowered a bit (which is quite low to begin with) or you can cut out a portion where the exhaust interferes. Not much cutting would need be done and structurally will still be very solid.
