Water Pump Replacement went wrong :-(

Followed the tutorial on how to replaced the water pump. Took a while but got it in and started her up. Ran smooth and quiet. Temp heatd up and stayed in the normal range. Shut it off, freshened up a little and took a spin around the neighborhood. NO issues.

Drove up to the 7/11 to get a celebration beer. Came out, started it up and now there is a knocking sound that follows with the rpm's of the engine. Pulled all the timing covers and valve cover back off - did not look like the belt had slipped. Only the exhaust cam pulley bolt was a smidge loose. Tightened that - put it all back together and started it up.

Noise is still there...

Describe the knocking noise. Is it like the standard issue lifter noise or is it something else?

It's a louder knocking rather than a ticking lifter sound. I was almost thinking I had left something a tool or a bolt something in the cam area but there wasn't.
I'm going to go back in and check the water pump pulley bolts and the crank pulley bolts.
I'll see if I can post a video of it somewhere.

A cheap ebay pump I installed started making a knocking sound after a few months - I think it may have been due to making the alternator belt just a little too tight.

Check the timing belt with the alignment marks. If the cam bolt was loose, it may have jumped out of time.

Yeah, that sounds more like a timing issue than an internal knocking. Granted that's with the sound from your phone video and through my tiny/tinny laptop speakers, but still...

Intake cam bolt was loose this time, as well as all the bolts on the cover with the E/I timing marks.
Tightened those and the noise went away.
My question is, why did these bolts back themselves off? Only to frustrate and scare the sh1t out if me?
Anyway, she's back on the road.

so, i see the crank pulley bolt torque spec on miata.net, but what is the torque spec on the cam pulley bolts?
ne1 know offhand?

You should use blue locktite and torque to 44 ft/lbs.
