What's a good motor for my 90? The stock 1.6? I'd like a bit more power, but I'm not power-hungry. I'm actually ok with how it runs now, with 186,000 on it and low compression on all 4 cylinders. I've driven a 2006 Miata and really liked that power level.

1.8 swap is the easiest but not NC territory, at least stock. The 1.8 swap is popular because it's easy to do, adds a bit more horsepower but more importantly, more torque. If you take the 1.8 and go, FI you can get a fast, fun car.
What kind of money are we talking, to have it done at Trackdog? Say, a stock 1.8 swap, and a mild turbo setup (7 psi or so?). PM me if needed.
Its an easy swap & you'd only spend about $200 more than dropping another 1.6 in it. Any questions let me know. I did the 1.8 swap a long time ago and helped a few other people do it. I'm pretty busy this weekend but when I get the time I'll check my old computer hd and I should have a nice write up on the swap with notes that I added after talking with Keith from Flying Miata.
Would it be cheaper to sell you current car and buy a Miata with a 1.8? The '94-'97 are not that much more $$ than the old small block Miatas. ;-)
I've thought about that too, POS. It's a ways in the future so I'll just keep the info stored away for now. My car is a good little daily driver so I'll just keep rolling with it until I absolutely have to replace it.
LS1, F20C, SR20DET are all fun motors but the swap might cost more than the car ;)

Well, most that end up doing the 1.8 swap already had a 1.6 and for some reason needed to rebuild or replace the engine so in that case its only like $200 more to do the 1.8 swap. I had the infamous 1990 crank failure, so I did the swap.Quote:
