M+S Tires

Asked this in other forums... figured I would get others opinions from this site as well.

I'm running with Raptor Riken HR 185 60r14 82h M+S tires. Decent tread left, 28 PSI. And the last 2 times that it rained when I went out and drove... I fishtailed. The first time I took a 90 degree turn at 10 mph and completely spun out. The second time I was extremely weary of my car sliding in the wet... and I was taking a very soft curve on ramp at 40 MPH in fourth gear taking my time. The revs were under 2500 and the cars in front of me drove atleast 10 mph faster than I was... and the car behind me was near tailgating. I slid out and let off the gas and corrected myself... but I still slid out! On this particular on-ramp... I would have no problem taking my old car (95 Lumina) 70+ MPH on to the on ramp while raining... or this Miata onto the on ramp at 90+ if it were dry.... (I don't do this, I'm just emphasizing the lack of turn, it's very near a straight line) In my entire history of driving (albeit just 4 years) I have fishtailed 0 times.

Would my tires be a probable cause? Or am I just not used to a featherweight sports car?

All-season (or cheap) tires have hard rubber and no grip. Add some rain and its accompanying oil slick and the Miata will easily spin. Save your pennies for some decent daily driver tires. There are several tire threads here on the forum if you search for them.

I've had pretty good luck with my KUMHO ASX All-Seasons. They grip more than I drive on the street and in the rain they feel great to me.

How old are your tires? Google finding tire age to get a tutorial on how to find the tires age. If they are more than a few years old their performance will be degraded also.

Here's what I found out:

The right 2 tires are 0511 so fifth week of 2011.
The left 2 tires are 0311, so third week of 2011.

I guess from what is posted above those are poor quality tires lol. That isn't very old.

Future reference note: Usually any tire (or automotive part, really) that is named to sound like something ferocious, dangerous, or the least bit intimidating, is probably pure crap.

Thanks everyone for your help on Tires. I do plan on changing them out for a new set of Yokohama AVS ES100, I have a special deal on them, buy 2 get 2 free, and will actually be managing to get the set of 4 for under $200! Looks like a pretty good buy to me.

Will keep you posted after purchasing them to see if it changes the effects while in the wet.

Ferocious sounding tires = Crap. Got it! ;)

Yeah I have to buy a 1 year alignment. Didn't expect that to be too expensive, guess I was wrong. I got a coupon in the mail.

Though it still looks like a pretty good deal to me. Though I've only purchased 2 sets of tires and when I did, I was looking for cheapest possible that would last a while.

Yep they lure you in with the buy 2 get 2 free then they throw all the other bullshit on the bill.

Make sure you get a total price before they take your keys.

WOW!..... Just WOW. Lol!!

So its 209 for 2 tires (and 2 for free)....

Then they charge 12.99 for Road Hazzard PER TIRE!
Then they charge 114.99 for Premium allignment and Premium installation.
And then....... that's not all....

They charge 35.99 PER TIRE for a 1 year warranty.

Total the guy was asking for was just shy of $550. I about died laughing after I hung up.

Road hazard.... + a warranty? I guess I don't get that at all. Dang good thing I didn't give them my keys before calling them on the phone to check!

Every time I buy new tires I shop like a MO-Fo spending lots of time online searching for the best price................I always wind up buying from Tire Rack. One day I'll learn to just save my time lol :P

I bought a set this last time had them shipped to the house and then carried them into a Firestone place in NRH or Watagua one or the other. 11 dollars per tire for mounting and balancing and that included lifetime balancing :)

Only downside to that firestone place is they are ALWAYS busy as hell unless you show up early expect to drop off your car and leave it there for the day lol.
