My sister has to turn in her lease 4Runner next month and she now wants a Kia Rio 5-Door.

These things seem solid and with a long ass warranty it seems like a safe bet. She likes it for several reasons it is cheap, long warranty, excellent gas mileage.
Anyone have any insight or warnings about Kia's??
It's a Hyundai. Other than the (now undeserved) stigma, I think a Kia is a smart buy.
The Kia is a great buy, we are on our second one. I had a 2006 Spectra 5 that I gave to the wife when I got the Miata. A year ago we traded it in for a 2011 Sorrento. I never had any real problems with either car. The 2011 had a defective "yaw sensor" but the service dept was great. I'm thinking about getting the Optima as my "comfy" car but still debating on saving for the Corvette. My 2 cents worth!
Mom just bought a loaded-out Elantra, which I believe is basically the same platform as the Rio. Its on-par with a Civic, and was comfortable and nice to drive. The warranty, reliability and pricing make it a great choice, IMHO, and the styling is excellent. I was impressed with how many gadgets were standard equipment on the trim level she bought.
Id suggest she take a look at the Veloster before she decides; I think its the best of the bunch.
Indeed. The lack of power killed it for us, but we really liked it otherwise. We found the engine sluggish, but it might not be as important to someone else. Excellent value, for sure.Quote:

I think the Forte is the sister car to the Elantra but she liked the Rio 5-door better than the Forte 5-door. For some reason she wants a 5-Door.
I stopped at Moritz Kia and looked at the Rio yesterday it is surprisingly nice for it's low low price!
I'll echo what everyone else has said (good value, solid vehicles, not deserving their old reputation)...
The one thing, and this is a big one, is that I feel like I'm back in the seventies with the greasy car salesmen every time I walk into a Kia or Hyundai dealership. They really do seem to want to prey on poor, uninformed buyers, so make sure that she's got financing prearranged (penfed or navycfu is who I'd recommend) and has a solid idea of the price to pay. Otherwise she's liable to be in there all dang day.
The roof is too low, I don't fit.
What Goofy said, I know a guy who just bought a Soul for under $19k and financed it for 6 years. WTF????
They're OK I guess, but I don't think I could really bring myself to drive a car with "Killed In Action" on the badge.
i took a new sportage on a trip a couple weeks ago, decent milage, but my back hurt after 4 hrs on the road, good ride and a decent look to them

I work out in Rockwall our sales are up 56% we outsell every dealership out here every month haha its kinda funny... Honestly these are truly great cars all of our new motors have gone to timing chains.... I really love the brand new kia Rio no joke

She got one (Silver Rio 5-Door SX) she picks it up today at Moritz Kia in Hurst. Dad made sure no shenanigans were played since he was the front man on the purchase of this one. ;-)

Speaking from experience, teenagers and cars are like magnets to other teenagers and cars. I can think of at least 9 insurance claims where, through no fault of their own, were t-boned at a red light, rear ended by a drunk at a red light, sideswiped in the school parking lot (verified by the security cams) again at work at Posado's, and most recently, a 10 point buck...Plus there were a couple that I suspect may have been a result of their own newly acquired driving skills. Thank goodness I bought them used cars with lots of steel between the bumper and the wheel for them to graduate through this process.
