My wife got a Lenovo in that price range and so far so good.
I paid about $600 after rebate for my giant-ass HP.
This summer my cousin picked up a Lenovo at Fry's for under $500.
I paid $450 for my 15" Dell two years ago with an i3, 4GB ram, big HDD, and a ten key.
After playing with the GF's Asus, I'd go with that because I like the look and feel better, hardware seems to be good, and they are affordable. You also don't have Dell calling and emailing you to sell shit you never asked for.

^Thanks for those...I'm not a Dell fan either. I sent her this link, seems like a good deal.

Rather than talk price, it is better to talk function. What is the person going to do with the computer? What type of storage needs are required?
I just saw a $300 HP laptop at MicroCenter the other day. 2GBRAM, 320GB HDD, AMD dual core processor.
There are two things I require from a notebook computer, anti-glare screen since I use them for tuning and a 10-key. I also can bring myself to buy a Lenovo of the feel of that keyboard/horribly mouse select keys, and that dot-mouse in the middle of the keyboard. It all makes me crazy.
