Hoosiers on smooth surfaces

I wonder why they used such a smooth surface for that track? Just to be less abrasive on tires?

I've heard that the grip is excellent and predicatble, its just physically smooth. Maybe similar to the TMS Road Course surface?

TMS infield is not smooth. That surface is rough and eats tires.

OK. Its easy on street tires. Is COTA physically smoother than TMS, or just different in its affect on tires?
