134A Compressor on a 1.6

I want to fix my A/C... it is getting hot out there.
My compressor is shot, and I might as well go to 134A.

So, what I want to know is: Will a 1.8 134A compressor match up with my 1.6 (1990)?

I know it will bolt on and the pulleys are the same, but I don't know about the hose fittings and the electrical.
If I go by the diagrams on mazdaspeed, then it looks like it will match. The compressor I have looks like the one from the 94-97 range. According to the diagrams the hose orientations are different. The 90-93 connections are on the back.

I plan on replacing the compressor, possibly the hoses if they don't match, the Receiver/drier, O-Rings, Oil, Possibly the Expansion valve.

Please advise me.

Why not go back with an OEM R12 compressor? Less stuff to change.

If you want to change over, you have to change more than just the compressor. the o-rings are not compatible, and i do not think the evaporator core would be up to snuff going from 12 to 134. i would look for a complete conversion kit if you are going that route. i'd stay with 12 if you can.

FWIW - I know none of us like talking to him...... but you may want to ask jrj512 where he took his R12 car to get the A/C serviced.

Knowing jrj512 it should be a TCB approved shop. ;-)

I saw Avarice at the adult book store last night and he asked me about this too. He seems pretty set on 134 and is thinking of just getting a system from a 1.8.

Not sure how they did it but I have r134 on my 1.6 (now 1.8 swapped) retained it thru the swap so... I dont know the details but you can look at it, or I'll sell it

What all would you be selling? Compressor, condenser, hoses, everything? Price?

Hoses are different.

Most of my system is off a 92 that ran r12. And I used a compressor from a 97 with r134. The only thing I noticed was I needed to use a longer bolt on one of the lines that connect to the compressor. And your going to have to use all new r134 gaskets. I've had it in my car now for over a year. Works great blows out 46* all day long.

And if your already doing all the gaskets get a new dryer and expansion valve. They are cheap.

Do you mean hose material? Or physical characteristics?

i believe the material is different between the hoses. basically the 134 attacks alot of the materials that R-12 did not, why i suggest getting a kit to convert if available.

The literature that I have read says that it was originally believed that the non barrier hoses designed for R12 would not contain the R134a. But, after years of testing, is seems that the PAG lubricant impregnates the hoses and prevents the R134a from permeating through. So, it the hoses are in good condition, then they should be fine. They are 23 years old tho...
