If its a bad head gasket, sack-up and pull the head. Its not fun, but it isn't a job that can't be figured out by an average-skill shadetree mechanic. Getting the head cleaned and decked is inexpensive, and the gaskets aren't costly either. I did the head gaskets on my 1976 Cadillac when I was 17, out in the street in front of my house, after I overheated it on a non-approved trip to the beach one summer. Messy, frustrating and tedious, but utterly do-able if you follow some step-by-step instructions.
