So I decided to put new brakes and shocks on my 97 NA. I'm ok with the brakes and the rear shocks but I've been stumped by the front shocks and need some experienced hands to give me a little help or the secret to this change out. Anybody up for that?
+1 for the long bolt method.

I saw this post earlier when looking for a solution, but looked difficult with the small amount of room there. I'll try it, gotta get this thing back on the road. Thanks!
Once you take the nut off the rear of the bolt, it should slide straight forward and rest on the front sway bar brackets. It may need some persuasion (screw driver/drift), and try to keep that upper A-arm level so it won't bind the bolt whilst sliding out.

Done I think. Long bolt was the way to go, however in my zeal to get the shocks back in I forgot to replace the plastic gasket before installation and I'm not sure I installed the springs exactly the way it came out. Is either of these going to cause problems later on?
If the springs are on the same axles (corner preferably) and oriented properly top/bottom, you should be fine. Its nice to get them back exactly the way they came out, but shouldn't make a meaningful difference on old springs. The gasket is something that might make some noise, but probably not a concern. Its pretty easy to loosen the top and slip it in there without having to disassemble the whole thing. You could also loosen the bolts, jack it up and spray some lube in the gap to achieve the same result, but temporary.
