Top Restoration Project

Hello Roadster brethren.

I don't know what material the NA/NB tops came in, but my NC has a cloth tan top. It has faded steadily over the years and has some glue/gunk/goop leaking through from the bottom in areas. I contacted a company out of the UK that has a product that strips, dyes and weatherproofs your existing top. Although it isn't 100% advised to change the color of your top, I figured a lighter color going black wouldn't be too difficult. I would not even hesitate to use this stuff on a black top to get it back to looking new. My top functions perfectly fine, I just couldn't swallow the $600+time to swap a top just for appearance right now.

Long story short, Renovo is amazing and easy to use. It is on the pricey side, but I did a massive amount of research before jumping in head first. Dupilcolor sells a dye in a rattle can but the words "Duplicolor" and "rattle can" need to not be near the top of my car. Plus when I contacted the company, they didn't give me a 100% straight answer as to if this would work for me. Colorbond had a more direct answer of "maybe" but their product didn't come with a UV protectant despite stellar reviews of interior trim. With Renovo only doing soft top/boat cover applications, I figure they were the best. Overall I am more than pleased. The top feels like cloth still which I love.

I've always wanted a black top, even more so with my recent mods. I've also ordered new black seats to even further complete the journey to going black. You know what they say...::Banana::

Nice work...will be interesting to see how it holds up under the Texas sun.

I am anticipating some fading. I think as long as I stay current on my UV protectant, I wont have any major issues. The top will be replaced one day so this is just a way to maybe extend the life a little.

This looks veeeeeerrrry interesting. I've been wanting a black top too, but my tan one isn't in bad enough shape just yet. I might have to patch a few stitches and give this stuff a whirl.
