If you follow the advice out there on tool forums about thorough break in and oil changes early on, they are pretty solid units. Not as loud as the oilless units, and you can slap a larger muffler on it to quiet it even more. Its a but shocking to see how much metal comes out in the initial oil changes, but it clears up quickly.
I'm on my 2nd 21gal only because I returned #1 under extended warranty thinking it was bad but the power in the garage of my new apt was the problem. Parted out and built the track car on #1 along with 2 years of random use. Think I changed the oil only once. New one I have had for 3 years and still have not changed the oil. Think I will do that when I unload the trailer.
I am getting the 21 gal vertical tank when I buy my next one. 8-10 gal compressors are fine for staplers and brad nailers, but they are not big enough for other tools.
I have a 220v 60g Harbor Freight air compressor that I bought new about 5 years ago and love it. Invest in a nice filter for it and look to Ebay for great deals on a used high-end impact wrench.
