Maybe just a burned out bulb in the cluster?

Some of my gauge and HVAC panel lights don't come on when I turn on the lights. a little tap on the panel or gauge hood and they light right up.
Might turn on the brights and tap on the hood to see if it can be persuaded.
Glad to see you still have your Miata!
That's insane. Mine hasn't worked in my Civic for 10 years. I'd just go to a different shop.
