My OEM battery called it quits and I'm thinking about replacing it with a lightweight unit -- either the Deka EXT20L or the Odyssey PC680. Aside from the need to adjust the hold-down etc., are there any major limitations or issues I need to know about -- e.g. using high-beams, stereo (factory), etc.? I'm told I'll need to use my battery tender for extended periods periods of non-use. Any experience with or preference for either of these batteries? Thanks.

I used the odyssey pc680 with good results. They last about 2 years each, and will crank a little slower in cold weather. I drove it everyday and was fine, but folks who let it sit for days at a time find they can lose too much charge to start the car. Also not good if you run a fancy stereo system.
The 6lb Braille was not strong enough for it to be reliable for DD, especially in cold weather.
Thanks Mike -- that's helpful. No fancy stereos, but I imagine the battery won't react well to the heated seat on the rare occasion I use it. I think I'm getting the Deka EXT20L -- same size and weight as the PC680 but higher CCA (310) and amp-hours (for whatever those ratings are worth).
It's not lightweight, but I used the Odyssey PC925L. It’s size is nearly the same as the original Panasonic battery if you put the Odyssey on it’s side (Length 6 5/8 in, Width 4 7/8 in, Height 7 in). The "L" suffix is the reversed terminals version. I also bought a pair of automotive adapter terminals so I could use the stock wiring without modification. I used stock battery hold-down parts and tray. This battery has been abused to no end and still works well.

I actually decided to get a direct replacement instead of lightweight. It's doubtful that I'd feel a difference on the street and I'm not competitive enough yet on the autocross course where it would have any material impact on my times.
I'm curious why the concern about oem electronic accessories (heated seats, high beams,...)? Are the Miata alternators so weak you are actually dipping into battery capacity with oem components? I would go looking for a problem if normal oem electronics were causing an issue. Big amps and subs are a different story. Winches and on board welders are different story, but I think that's a thread for a different forum.
The accessories weren't really a concern -- I'm confident they alternator is up to task. I just decided that I didn't want to deal with the low reserve capacity of the smaller batteries. It's nothing that my battery tender couldn't address, but the compromise just isn't worth it to me at this point. When I get to a place where the 12 lbs makes a difference, I'll revisit the battery choice.
Doc says I have a few batteries worth of gut to unload myself. No impact to CCAs either. ;)Quote:
