Is it really this complicated to adjust idle on my NA?

Idle on my 1997 is running around 500 rpm according to the stock tach. I read it should be 800-850. Mine is an automatic (oh shut up!) so when at a traffic light, at this rpm it can chip your teeth :jocolor:

I expected this to require nothing more than a screw adjustment, but I'm reading that you have to short two wires on something, run the car for a specified time, stand on one leg, face North and wave a flag...

Is it really so involved? Moreover, why? Where's the best instructions?

It really isn't that hard. These engines aren't terribly smooth at idle so I wouldn't expect much raising the idle slightly.
