I have a spare set of wheels that I want to mount a dedicated set of street tires on for track use (HPDE and TT), not for autocross. I know the Bridgestone RE-71R works well on track since that's all I've used so far. Are there other tires that are as good as or better for an NC on track?
I have the Nitto NT01. I love them. They can take the heat of 25-minutes of hot laps w/o getting greasy. Good communication and plenty of warning. Easy to recover unless I totally over drive them. Even though I was not supposed to and I won't recommend anyone to, I had driven them in the rain and survive.
How well do they last, like how many sessions? Are they ok to drive on the street?
They are pricey. I want to consider some lower-cost tires too.
Keep using your RE71s.
If you want to go faster and have more fun go to an HPDE where you can get in car instruction.
I am currently confirmed for the Apex HPDE to be held at Cresson on December 10th. I'm planning to sign up for the Apex HPDE on January 14th at Cresson when registration opens for it. I'll also be registering for The Driver's Edge HPDE to be held at TWS on January 21-22.
I'm not sure if my current RE71s will survive the next two autocrosses and still be usable for three HPDEs, so that is why I'm considering a dedicated set of tires. Since I have an extra set of wheels, I figured I might as well get a set of track tires for them.
When I say "track tires", I mean street tires that I'll use on the track. I was actually thinking about a set of Hankook Ventus R-S3s, because they are considerably less expensive than the RE71s. They wear well too. I'm just not sure how good they are for the track, or if I'll regret not having RE71s on the track. The RE71s are kind of addictive.
Bad idea. Just keep running RE71s. When they wear out buy a new set.

If you need to switch to a cheaper tire do it. There are a few choices that are a half second off and cheaper to run. But it would be better for you to stay on the same tire not switch back and forth between events.

Federal's are hard to beat for price/performance ratio, and they seem to wear reasonably well. DavidSS knows of what he speaks.
