what ECU to use?

What ECUs are board members using?

for normally aspirated engines

I have a MegaSquirt that I am not happy with

I see Flyin Miata has a FM221 (less features, half the price of the hydra) unit for about the same price as MS. Anyone using that?

What else is out there that someone has experience with?

Stock ECU for me.

Honest answer. If you've outgrown the MS and want more you're going to have to go full system like a Halltech or AEM standalone unit. Support will be minimal and you'll be largely on your own, but you will be a good tuner by the time your finished. I don't know of any interfaces that allow you to edit Mazda ECUs like for Ford or LSedit.
