I found this Mechanic’s Tale about VWs pretty amusing.
Some excerpts:

In the year 2000, a customer came in to show him the great deal she got on a leftover (brand-new) '99 VW Passat. I guess he couldn't hide the look of disappointment on his face because she said, "What's wrong, you don't like it?" To date, Joe can verify $12,000 in repairs and maintenance to that same vehicle, and there are sure to be some dealer bills he hasn't seen. At 20,000 miles it required complete four-wheel brake replacement. At 40,000 miles the water pump impeller broke, causing an overheat. (Before hearing the story I would have said that water pump impellers never break.) The power windows failed one by one all the way around.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'll never buy a car from a company that hasn't figured out how to make a decent power window (a relatively simple and robust piece of equipment, when done right) in over 20 years. :razz:
My mother got a brand new Beetle in high school back in the 70's and drove it for at least 100k miles before it got ran over by a truck and no problems. We had a 94 Jetta and put 230k miles on it with no problems and my friend just sold a 91 Jetta with over 200k miles on it and had no major problems. Another friend had a 90 Jetta that got wrecked pretty bad but still technically drivable and we tied to kill it and the sucker kept running.
So, guess it's in the eye of the beholder....you say bad, I say good

Every car manufacturer has their recalls and problems. And I don't see why everyone thinks GM is unreliable, maybe the interior quality was pretty cheap from the mid 80's until the past few years but they are just like Ford IMO...run forever no matter how much of a POS they may come to be. The designs may be lame or the car underpowered or handles like a boat, but they last. I would say Honda, Toyota, are the most reliable cars and probably put Ford and GM tied for 3rd. I know VW's aren't going to win the most reliable contest but they are not the POS's that a lot of people think. Just like Dodge/Chrysler, untill late late 90's they were POS IMO. That's what I think based on my experience with cars through family and friends racing and such.
