Starter issues?

When you turn the key there is a double click, and nothing else.
The lights, windows, radio etc... all seem to work fine, and popping the clutch will get it started, but after shutting it off it wont come back on.
I found some info from http://home.att.net/~miataville/ about the ignition.
not sure where to start, think it may be the starter? I have a neighbor who put an SR20det in his 240sx himself, and he seems to know more than I, he thinks the starter for the fact we can pop the clutch adn it runs.

What year is the car again??

Per the profile its a 1995 M edidtion. This shouldn't have the transponder key type ignition yet, should it?

I think I 'd check the fuse box for the ignition fuse and the fusable link first.

what is a fusible link?
as you will soon find out i dont know much about fixing my car, without miata.net i would not have been able to do the timing belt and radiator replacement.

If you turn the key to the start position without depressing the clutch do you still get a click? Wonder if the safety switch on the clutch pedal could be an issue?

I'd also check the ignition switch, don't recall a lot of cases of stater failures on Miatas but I could be wrong!

My safety switch was going out, and causing the same symptoms. I bypassed it, and I have no more issues.

I will check for the click(w/no clutch) in the morning.

POS- When i turn the key without the clutch depressed, nothing happens. Well there is no click, but i did see the lights on the radio click on and off.

How about the obvious. Dead battery? You have a voltmeter?

If the lights are on and you hit the starter, do the lights get very dim?

No voltmeter. The lights dont dim when i try to start it, the radio works fine and the windows roll up and down like normal.
Majik- said to try to clutch safetyswitch, i will research that and try it once i get home.
Any other suggestions.

SO after reading the above thread and after POS's question, i am not sure if he was trying to determine whether or not the clutch switch is the problem.
Also in the above thread there is a link to BILL STROHM's site, but there is not much info as to how to actually to get into the ignition, anyone have a more detailed site i could check. (for the ignition) I only have a Haynes manual.

Yep that's exactly what you were trying! If you turn the key all the way to start possition then depress the clutch you should hear something going on, ideally the starter motor turning or at least a click of some sort.

When I had my issue, I could turn the key all the way. I could pump the clutch and it would click until it finally got the starter going.

Did you ever figure out what the problem was dyingbreed?

No i never figured it out,but it started working after i fiddled with the clutch safety switch, so logically i assume that is it. When i have a bit more time i am going to go ahead and clean the ignition and get the flying miata connector.
