How bout a STX 325is. You could get a '93 325is with a LSD for a little over $5k if you're lucky. There was a guy selling a fully setup STX car about 6 months ago for between $7k and $8k.
BMWs don't have to be expensive and the inline 6s are great. I'm sure you miss that M coupe a little bit.
i miss my bimmer. that was a good car. mechanically
The DOHC (91-94) 240sx were dirt cheep when i was racing um......not sure on the prices down here in the south. And being a truck motor (KA24DE) it was torque'y little inline 4.
Good call, a 240SX took first place in STS at nationals this year, but a lot of work and money was put into it. I think the biggest problem is going to be finding a clean, inexpensive example to make an autocross out of. This drifting craze is killing the Silvia... oops, I mean 240SX supply.
So true and said.....wish someone would have been lookin this time last year. Sold mine for $900 everything included. :( I guess you could always imprt a Silvia (200sx) with the SR20DET but then ur talkin BIG bux and different class!
Used to race with guys running old N/A DSM's but i'm not sure on the cost?
Ford Fiesta
Yugo
AMC Gremlin
Well, you asked for cheap! Did you want them to handle, too???????
Anything Honda! :albino:
S.
Honda CRX Si... I've NEVER driven a FWD car that handled better than one of these... of course, I'm very partial to 1st gen RX7s - I've owned 4, including a really, really, really ragged out '84 GSL-SE that was an absolute blast in spite of the bent axles, the urban camo paint/primer/rust, and the loose steering... good times.
i might pick up a turbo mr2 really soon. im hyped
I had one of those! It was my "original" POS! ::Banana::

That all depends on your definition of dirt cheap, but here are some of the less expensive competitive cars I can think of:
A Stock '89-'96 C4 Corvette (just buy a few spare water pumps )
C Stock '99 Miata (won't win Nationals, but can still be competitive at any other level)
E Stock '93+ MR2 or '95-'96 R Package
F Stock 3rd or 4th Gen Camaro
STS Civic or 240SX
STS2 Miata or CRX
I've had a lot of fun with my Escort for the last 2 1/2 years. I won a few trophies, but I also got my hat handed to me a few time, too. Only one mechanical problem in all that time, which was about 65 autocrosses and about 9 schools. That problem was the 3-4 shift fork.
I am not sure what class it would run in, but Porsche 924Ss or 944s can be had for less than 5000. well balanced cars.
