Been with IBMfcu, Dallas Teachers fcu and now with Texans fcu (former TI) Tried Wells Fargo in there when i was doing work for them. Like the idea of a non-profit organization. I still get great service and calls when suspicious activity on my cards as well. i think they use the same servicing companies as the larger banks. The credit union fees have been going up as well, but not nearly as bad as the regular bank fees
I have USAA and Navy Federal, the only person in my family who is in the military or has been in the military who is still alive is my brother. USAA has recently changed their methods around (I believe) and made it so you have to have a parent who is in the military or has been in the military in order to get USAA.Quote:

Either way... if you CAN get into USAA for insurance, by all means get in. They have the cheapest rates around (that I've found) and I have never had a problem with them. Getting loans is incredibly simple as well. For every step you have in USAA to get a loan or move debt around or get a credit card, there are 5+ steps with Chase.
The main reason I got Navy Federal is... they are ALWAYS open. I can always give them a call and I get a very polite representative who does whatever they can to solve my problem FAST. They understand that the people in the military need help at odd hours due to their location on the globe, and they also understand they don't have a whole lot of time to dedicate to fixing money problems so they go fast.
Anyways, this is just my 2 cents as a casual and young bank user.
You're right. USAA banking is open to just about anyone (both my parents were in the Navy), but the insurance side is much more strict. I don't need another bank right now so it's not a big deal either way :)
Been a CU member for over 35 years..........I am sure I have saved a lot over the years by no or reduced fees.

USAA has a civilian side insurance offering, USAA Casualty. When I got out of the Army, I had to switch my insurance to that side and the rates went up. The military-only insurance is very favorably-priced, but used to be reserved for active duty/reservist/retired only. I don't know if that is still the case, since its been almost 20 years since I got out.
The civilian side insurance is still picky about who it will cover, so that might have more to do with who is accepted than their millitary status. That's part of the way they keep rates low.
