After you remove all the screws (check under the ash tray) and shift knob, grab the bottom-outer edges on the front edge of the console (up near the radio) and pull straight up. It takes more force than you would think.Quote:

The plot thickens! On the '02 there are 4 Bolts that hold the top plate on the transmission, they are all loose :confused: . You can move the shifter and see the plate move.... Of course you cannot just remove the top plate without removing the entire transmission.
You can see them on the four corners of the top of the transmission.

Wow that plate was really loose! It's a totally different car now, shifter is acting much more Miata like now.
And as an added bonus quite a bit less heat in the cabin! :afro:

On a 6-Speed car it is possible to put the shifter in wrong! We noticed after the boot changing to 1st, 3rd, and 5th gears put you hand into the radio. Found out we have the shifter in 180 degrees off. Mazda paints a yellow dot on the shifter, with it facing the rear of the car we punched the radio, with it facing the radio no problems!
Here are some poorly done pictures showing the car in 2nd with the dot facing the back of the car or the radio, notice the different possition with the car in the 2nd, noticable difference!
