Got home thursday afternoon to 7 inches in the driveway and alley, so immediately began shoveling out the driveway and alley right in front of the drive, since my time living in Baltimore and St. Louis taught me about re-freezing. I have a 3 car drive, and my 92 Chevy p/u and Yaris had been sitting under the Live Oak tree that covers 2/3 of the drive all day. Decided to put the Yaris and wife's Accord under the tree and the p/u in the snowy spot. All the while, the snow just kept coming, so I started getting a premonition about the tree and moved everything out from under it and into the empty driveway across the alley (neighbor passed away, house hasn't sold), which involved another hour of shoveling to get that driveway clear. Not 5 minutes after I got the cars situated, a massive branch collapses right onto the Yaris' normal spot. Shortly there after, I start hearing tree limbs all over the neighborhood, and saw several transformer's blow. We have one other live oak that overhangs the kitchen, so I got my pole saw, attached a big rake to it with zip ties, got on the roof and knocked snow off the branches until most of the tree over the house was no longer weighed-down. So, the house and cars are safe.
Got in my 2wd, 5spd manual 1/2 ton chevy and tried to go to the nearby ACE hardware store, and couldn't get up the alley without sliding, so I dropped the tires to 10 psi and presto, traction! Drove down, picked up 5-60lb bags of quickcrete, put them over the axle, and my truck was cruising all over Desoto like it had 4wd and snow tires! Grabbed the tow strap and pulled 6 neighbors out off alleys and intersections. Went home and called it a day.
Woke up Friday, no work (DISD), so threw on snow pants and ski jacket and went out to survey the damage and check the roads. Sure enough, a Lexus was stuck in the midle of the street only a block from my house. Offered to tug him out, put the strap on my truck and had his buddy hook-op the lexus, and got him back to straight in no time. I walked around back, and told him to back up so I could free the strap from under my bumper. Now, I know better than to trust a stranger, or to work without gloves, but I didn't follow the rules. As I reach down to unhook the strap, this guy decides he doesn't want to stay under the tree that is dropping snow on his lexus, so he starts moving without telling me, which pulls the strap tight and pinches my hand between the frame and tow hook. The last inch of my thumb is nearly severed when I get it free.
Anyway, after the craziest drive I've ever done in snow (or dry!), and 10 hours in the emergency room/surgery, I have 21 stitches, no thumbnail, a crushed bone and lots of vicoden! No good deed goes unpunished.
Moral of the story, STAY HOME!! :) Now, how do I autoX with one good hand...
