Race Hard!

I talked to them earlier today and they made it thru tech and they where out on the track getting familiar with the car.
Looks like they'll have a good time.:burnrubr:
I hear they got a 50 lap penalty for bringing a Miata... I have heard of some teams getting 100-200 lap penalties at other Lemons events, so 50 isn't too bad.
Speed mention the penalty laps when I talked to him. He said they wanted to give them a lot more than 50 laps and even threatened worse - claiming the car!
But 50 laps is stiff punishment when the last race winner only completed about 440 laps and I think they were racing on the shorter course. Seems like they are just being tough on Miatas because they are perfect for this type of race.
Oh well I hope the stay under the radar and come home with the car intact and lots of good stories to tell us.
Did the team know about the penalty laps when they started building their Miata?
i haven't seen all of the documentation, but I thought they had pretty much everything accounted for.
Chris texted me and said that Jay could tell that they knew what they were doing in the shop. I somewhat understand what chris means and would have liked to hear what Jay had to say. 50 laps is ok, though, considering the miata hate.
Yikes...
More on judging here.Quote:
if you own or work for a mechanic or performance shop, we hate you. People that build their cars in their garages rock and speak to the LeMons ethos. Anything else draws our ire and it's safe to expect us to exact horrible things on your car, your driver and your team throughout the weekend. So if nothing else, don't admit it.
But 50 laps is the difference between first place and 20th place in the last race at MSR Houston on the 1.3 mile course. And this time they are running the long course (I think its the 2.38 mile configuration) instead of the 1.3 so it makes the penalty even worse. The guys knew going in that they are tough on Miatas so like Wags said, you have to factor in the hate. But basically they are telling you not to bring a Miata to the Lemons and a 50 lap penalty takes you out of the running.
I did talk to Gary and he mentioned that they penalized another Miata 500 laps - that is like telling them that they can't even race. Say goodbye to your entry fees, I guess.
I think the best Lemons car is something like a old 4-banger Rustang.
BWAHAHAHAHA

Most penalty laps given today: 1066 laps to a 2005 Cooper S, in honor of the Battle of Hastings. Will post details on Jalopnik later.
I was concerned that they would get the car claimed or destroyed the first time I saw it. The car is so much nicer than the cars I've seen in the photos and videos posted on the site. You can't hide workmanship. I hope they make it home with the car in more or less one piece, then they might get to run it at the ECR lemons event in June. I think they were a little worried too.
I spotted these photos on Flickr from yesterday's testing.

Update?

Just talked to Speed. The car is still running and the long course does not suit the tired old engine. So they are well behind with the pentaly laps acquire yesterday and a couple from today. So they should be able to escape the crusher. They'll probably finish midpack and live to run another race.
Been thinkin about how it went. Hope all is well.
They finished intact and ended up in the middle of the pack. Not bad considering the amount of penalties the acquired over two days. The car has a few new scuffs, but most important, it lives to race another day.
Congratulations guys for completing the race, next one should be even better after this experience.
Congrats guys!!!!
Lets hope they assign a residual value low enough to allow Team Miagra to race penalty free at the North Dallas Hooptie next June!
They were assessed 50 lap penalty right from the start giving them a starting position around 135 in a field of 140. They finished around 60. We figure they would be in the top 20 had they not acquired black flag penalties; one which cost them 20-30 laps. All of the drivers had a better second day when they realized that they had to run a race line for blocking as opposed to the optimal line. They were also taking it easier on Saturday for fear of being crushed.
Unfortunately, there was no crush for anyone. The organizers gave all participants sheets to fill out for voting who gets crushed. If they weren't turned in they would consider it a vote to crush no one. Spectators weren't allowed to vote. I personally saw two cars that should have been crushed but cie live'.
I'm still in Hitchcock TX and don't have software to reduce the photos' sizes here. I'll have to wait to post my pics till I get back.
They were still running when I got there on Sunday. Gary was disappointed that I sold they Lincoln because there were two Lincolns running. I think they need something new to race by the Dallas event because they may be looking to crush two cars to make up for not crushing one at Houston. Something like this....

That sounds like a ton of fun. I wouldn't mind crewing for a Lemons car one day.
I hope we get some pics up soon. I know that Vern, crew chief extraordinaire, found a little bit of time to snap some pics...
I believe there is another big sedan amongst this crowd that might make a good LeMons car....................
What they really need is a Wartburg or a Borgward Isabella or this......

Yes. they really need to get this. It's even the same Miagra Blue color scheme!
Sorry for the delay. I got the first part up on photobucket. Not sure if I'll get more up today but it's a start. Was a great time and I look forward to February's race. I added commentary and it works best if you view them in order. I tried slide show but the thumbnails were over the descriptions so clicking one pic at a time works best I guess.
lol awesome they made you do a puzzle on the hood :)
Nice spoiler there.:punchout:
...and how long did it take?????
45 Minutes and it still wasn't completed.
They let us go out of pitty :(
I was standing by Skirt pointing out pieces that go together. I'm not allowed to touch anything on the car or any tools or help because I'm a spectator so it was kinda frustrating. They were down to the red pieces at top and bottom and were trying to get the edges done. I grabbed a corner piece and placed it and the head judge walked up and said, "Just walk away." I'm thinking, "Uhoh, I'm busted and they're gonna get in trouble!" But then he said, "Just put in in the box and get outta here you guys are the sorriest group of puzzle solvers I've ever seen. Next time bring a 12 year old!" I think that took up about 50 minutes and cost them about 23 laps.
No problem. I doubt more than a few read the descriptions anyway.
I know it's all in fun and the puzzle part is funny. Some of the penalties seem unsafe to me. The car alarm could be enough of a distraction to you and the other drivers to cause an accident. I've also seen items welded or attached to cars that could be a real killer if they came off at speed. I think Hal needs to be their safety boss.
Great pics Nails, I can't wait to see the rest.
Nice pics Nails.
Thanks ya'll! Here's more. Other cars that were there including two contenders for the crusher. I'm still ::Rant:: that they didn't crush a car.
No photobucket here have to wait til after work.
Final album here. ::Banana::
