So now what?

Ok at the risk of showing off my considerable ignorance and being spontaneously combusted.....

Saturday I attended my first NTAXS event as an observer. I got to visit with several of you all out there and learned a little about how the event runs. I have read the some of rules however I am as confused as a corn beetle on classes and such (and the rules too in some cases)

My car is 1990 with a FM 2.5 suspension. everything else is stock.

What was not clear is how you go from observer to participant. What do I do? Where is the best place to read up and learn? :confused:

When the S2k Club is running the even it's not normal SCCA Classing. They base their classing strictly on engine sizing. SCCA classing also confuses me but there are guides to help you I had to read the rules a few times to get them. I'm mainly out to have fun so when I run SCCA classing is high on my list of things I worry about. I do know now I can run in STS class. My Saturn can run in STX if I'm not mistaken.

This PDF helped me a lot in figuring out how to class my cars.

SCCA Novice Class was held on March 20. The driving part was moved to April 18th. Pretty sure you had to go to the classroom part.

I would strongly suggest that you just come to an event (SCCA April 11th) and enter as a novice. Someone will help you with classing, and there are several who will be glad to show you the ropes.

In SCCA and ER, you would be in STS, or NSTS for Novice.

In NTAXS, you could be class 1.

In BMW CCA, you would be in class X.

I do not know what PCA class you would be in.

Just when I think I am running out of dumb questions, where do you all buy your helmets?

Most, if not all, of the local clubs have loaner helmets. Bring a head sock and use one of theirs for now.

After a few events, you will have a better idea of what will fit your needs. Then, we can help you find a good deal.

Also is everyone a SCCA member? is that required? Are we talking the nomex head sock?

Questions are good.

If you run at an SCCA event you must be a member of SCCA. If you are not a full time member, you can get a weekend membership at the event for $15.

None of the other clubs require a membership in their club, but being a member usually gives you a discount on registration.

Not all of us are SCCA members.

Not a Nomex, just a painters head sock will do.

I think WRX74 wears a Nomex balaclava, but they are not required.

No, mine are just painters head socks I bought at Lowes or Home Depot!

I got my helmet at a motorcycle shop. Just make sure that it is SNELL certified.

The BMW club is supposed to require a membership after the first event, but they rarely enforce it. However, if you like their events and you plan to attend several, then it is a better deal to get a membership.

I think ER membership is only $15 and you get $5 off each event, so that is a bargain if you plan to run four or more.

PCA membership requires that you own a Porsche, or at least grab the VIN from one for sale on autotrader.com.
