Emmsions Testing Question

Got a 1995 Ford Ranger 2.3 liter 5 Speed. It is almost time for an inspection it has an OBDII port and I have been working my way at whittling down the list of CEL it had when I got it at its TCB price.

Put a :cat: in it this weekend and so far no codes but I still have 2 ready states for it to clear. Although I do note on the Texas website on the older Vehicles you are allowed 2 not ready.

Now for my question since it is a 1995 and has OBDII what test will it take? Will it go on the treadmill or will it be a plug and test? The current and very questionable sticker on it shows ASM not OBD???

My '95 was always tested as OBD II... but that was a dozen years ago...

I would have thought if you have OBDII it would be the test that would be used. Then again, I thought OBDII was only a 1996 MY and newer thing. I didn't think there was a 1995 vehicle out there with OBDII. Maybe there are some mid-year 1995 vehicles that got OBDII.

Well I'm wondering about the authenticity of that inspection sticker when I got the truck it in March it was barely running and I doubt it would have passed an ASM or OBDII test.

My OBDII Scanner and the Torque App have been working great on this truck since I got it in March. Heck my OBDII scanner was what alerted me to all the codes when I went to see and buy the truck. The Scanner was a great little negotiating tool I must say. ;-)

The codes it is generating are matching OBDII diagnostic information and I have used those codes to get to where we are today.

The interwebz show that some Rangers were OBDII compliant before 1996 and other sources say that isn't the case.

Haven't found any definitive proof from Ford yet.

Wouldn't the definitive proof be the fact that you can connect and read OBDII codes? Am I missing something here?

You are thinking along the same lines as me! But Texas shows 1996+ for OBDII testing and this turd has an ASM inspection sticker on it now.

I don't imagine OBDI vehicles will not have an OBDII port. ::Bulb::

I guess you'll know when you go to inspect it. Let us know what they decide to do. Here's my guess as to how you can play it.

1. Just tell them it's a 1995 and they will do an ASM.

2. Tell them you have an OBDII connector and they will do it that way.

An early OBDII computer will not send as much data as a newer vehicle such as YM or possibly even VIN so I'm guessing the computer would accept your pre-1996 vehicle.

The benefit of OBDII diagnostics is you should be confident whether you will pass or not just by reading your codes. An ASM will be a mystery until you pass.

The ASM has the benefit of not reading anything but tail pipe emissions so you can have all kinds of issues and still pass. It's also easier to get a vehicle to pass with an ASM if you're having trouble and have a friendly inspector. wink wink nudge nudge.... ;) + ::1Dollar: = ::Good::

As someone who was a state inspector for 3 years I can tell you that if theres a way to get the car not OBD tested thats the way to do it. If the vehicle's MANUFACTURED date (the date on the door jam of the drivers side)and the date on the insurance is before 96 it can be ASM tested. Also everything black roadster said is correct!

CEL light on the dash is burned out that is on my list to fix hopefully this weekend.

Then we will see how it does. Once the light is fixed I figure it will pass OBDII or ASM as she sits now.

My son is an inspector and says it is to be tested as ASM due to the year. Makes no matter that there is OBD2 in it.

I think you should really consider the potential ramifications on people's sensitivities when posting mature content, BR. Some of us have strongly-held values that are easily threatened by lewd and lascivious content. Shame.
