Have notice a drip of oil on the garage floor coming out of the 2002 Miata, decided to snoop around today to see what I could find!
I found both shift boots busted on a 34,000 car, wacky stuff!

Pretty typical actually. I've heard of this before.
No suprise there... it's a high heat area exposed to lots of crappy elements... it's a shocker they don't go earlier.
They have probably been on the way out for a while. The drip on the garage floor was my only indicator.Quote:

Be sure and put some talc powder on the new ones when you install them. Keeps the rubber from wearing itself out.

Yep pulled out the old 2002 Parts list and it was the same p/n for the boots FOR A 5-speed or a 6-Speed!Quote:

I want to check my sifter but not having any luck in removing the center console.:( Anyone kind enough to let me know how to remove the center console to get to the shifter? I removed all the screws that I can see but it seems that something is still holding it back and I afraid to use force and break some of the tabs.

POS...Yes the inner boot holds the shifter in place. Once you get the boot un bolted you have to Jiggle it, just a little bit!!...the shifter that is. It only fits in there one way...

After you remove all the screws (check under the ash tray) and shift knob, grab the bottom-outer edges on the front edge of the console (up near the radio) and pull straight up. It takes more force than you would think.Quote:

The plot thickens! On the '02 there are 4 Bolts that hold the top plate on the transmission, they are all loose :confused: . You can move the shifter and see the plate move.... Of course you cannot just remove the top plate without removing the entire transmission.
You can see them on the four corners of the top of the transmission.

Wow that plate was really loose! It's a totally different car now, shifter is acting much more Miata like now.
And as an added bonus quite a bit less heat in the cabin! :afro:

On a 6-Speed car it is possible to put the shifter in wrong! We noticed after the boot changing to 1st, 3rd, and 5th gears put you hand into the radio. Found out we have the shifter in 180 degrees off. Mazda paints a yellow dot on the shifter, with it facing the rear of the car we punched the radio, with it facing the radio no problems!
Here are some poorly done pictures showing the car in 2nd with the dot facing the back of the car or the radio, notice the different possition with the car in the 2nd, noticable difference!
