Here are the first pictures of Pontiac's new G8 sedan. RWD. 362hp 6.0 liter V8. Looks fantastic. The Australian version (Holden Commodore SS-V) is supposed to be a hoot to drive.

Assuming this comes with a manual, it looks like a great choice in the big sedan market. Certainly much more engaging than a 300C, and better looking than a Charger.

Is the G8 the replacement for the Grand Prix???
Yes, thank God. My father-in-law drives a Grand Prix GTP. Nice enough car, but ultimately pretty dull. This thing looks pretty spicy. It certainly looks 100% better than the GTO. It'll probably be priced like it, too, meaning that the top of the line version will come in around $35k.
Give it to me in metallic black with red leather seats, a 6-speed, and tinted windows and I might be tempted.

Hate to see GM drop another of it's long standing names, the name Grand Prix has been around GM since 1962, but I'm sure some marketing nimrod thought G8 sounded better......

There was a write up recently (Automobile, I think) about the car companies moving away from names and toward letter/number combinations. The reasoning was something like, "Hey, it's worked for BMW and Lexus, let's try it too...".Quote:

I liked it when car manufacturers used unique names for their cars instead of numbers. They were easy to remember and some were outstandingly cool...
The only cool names now are the ones like Viper, Gallardo, Elise, things like that. These computer generated names and silly number combinations make me mad :(
Yeah, Acura made a bad move giving up Integra and Legend (Vigor was no great loss). Of course, the worst crime in recent memory was Mazda dropping the Miata name. Boo2

This G8 (I've heard it referred to as a G8 GXP also) sounds pretty sweet on paper, and the Holden looks pretty good. I wouldn't pay that much for a GM though; the GTO's were going for 50% of their selling prices w/in 2 years.
Going for half after driving off of the lot describes most of the Big 3 cars.
And this will make the car more appealing, how?
Personally, I think the Ford Five Hundred sounds more appealing, not that I'd buy either one.
I guess that the reason for changing the names of the cars to Alpha-numeric combinations is due to having nearly exhausted the American-english dictionary. Once a car name has been used, it is unusable by other manufacturers.
So the Ford Passat, er, eh... I mean 500 is now going to be the Taurus... oh joy.

One of the main things that sways me away from domestics is technological inefficiency. (Read HP/Liter) That combined with 50 yr old suspension technology is why I would by an old Ford/Mopar/GM. At least back then they looked good. Now a days the bodies seem to thick/tall. Just look at the sleek but powerful lines on an old Charger.
