totally off topic, but trickyrix comment reminded me of the "viva viagra" marketing campaign going on now. Coincidentally, I caught part of the Elvis special earlier this week and am convinced that he would be less than pleased with that.

The first motor had a #4 bearing failure 20k miles before I bought the car.

The second motor died because I was lazy and didn't check the oil level before a time trial event. It doesn't matter how clean the oil is if you starve the bearings - my own stupid mistake.

In between, the car got 70k hard miles, over 600 autocross runs, and almost two thousand track miles. It would probably still be running like a champ if I had bothered to check the oil that day.

Powertrain engineers often have to compromise on what they think may provide the longest life in order to meet packaging constraints and cost targets. At least, that's what I hear.

Just because it came that way from the factory, doesn't mean it is optimized for "enthusiastic" use.

Given the history, longevity and reliability of the Miata, I will continue to use OEM. You don't have to if you don't want to.

Thats all well and good, until Maxda changed filter vendors. :o

I use Purolator "PureONE" PL14610 (available at Pepboyz)

About a capfull more oil and quite a bit more filter area.

Royal Purple 10w30 changed every 5k.
