The first motor had a #4 bearing failure 20k miles before I bought the car.
The second motor died because I was lazy and didn't check the oil level before a time trial event. It doesn't matter how clean the oil is if you starve the bearings - my own stupid mistake.
In between, the car got 70k hard miles, over 600 autocross runs, and almost two thousand track miles. It would probably still be running like a champ if I had bothered to check the oil that day.![]()

Powertrain engineers often have to compromise on what they think may provide the longest life in order to meet packaging constraints and cost targets. At least, that's what I hear.
Just because it came that way from the factory, doesn't mean it is optimized for "enthusiastic" use.
