Thread: Laptop Battery Life

    Default Laptop Battery Life

It seems as if lately my laptop doesn't run as long as it once did while on battery power....

Computer is about a year old, so I'm guessing it's new battery time, is that a safe guess or could there be other issues?

    TIA

If it's a ni-cad battery, yes. It's good to drain them down as far as possible before re-charging.

Most laptops these days are lithium ion. They don't have the memory issues of NiCd and have a higher power density than NiMH.

The downside is they steadily lose their charge capacity. My Lenovo ThinkPad has a utility that will run the battery down very very low then do a full charge cycle to try and revive some life but I see the power capacity disappear over time. Full charge shows less and less wattage on the gage every month. Over time (2 years) that get significant.

Like RJ said, this is a pretty common occurance. I see it all the time at work. If your lappy doesn't have said utility, go into the power settings and disable any power saving features. Then let the lappy die. Most laptops will recharge without being turned on so, after it dies, let it sit for a while and then just plug it in to it's AC adapter.

Also, most manafacturers warranty the battery for the first year, so if it's really bad see if they can get you a replacement.

I try to run all of my charge-able batteries down as far as possible before charging, even the Li-ions.

My laptop, phone, and MP3 player still have pretty good battery life from when they were new.

    Back from the dead!

I'm now getting about 45min to an hour out of a charge.

Also figured out this thing is about 3 years old, so the original battery held up pretty good considering.

Anyone know of a TCB source for a battery HP wants $140.00.

My dad's company sells laptop/camera batteries out in CA. PM me the model # and I'll see what I can find out.

Here's another option, not as cheap though.

I recently had to replace my Dell battery - my laptop hit the 1 year old mark. I upgraded to the 9 cell battery hoping it would give me more time and also last longer...I was right on one account, it gave me more time but after a year the most time I had on it was 15 minutes which was totally useless. I recently replaced it with the OEM 6 cell and get probably 2 hours with it.

I don't know if it is a NiCd or NiMH - but either way I expected it to work longer than a year. My old laptop had the "conditioner" software on it, where it would completely dicharge and recharge and then reset the battery "clock" for a more accurate use time. This computer doesn't have that and the "clock" that shows useage time left is completely inaccurate.

I have a Dell XPS M1210 - I wanted it specifically for it's compact size.

If you're handy and really cheap, rebuild it yourself
