Thread: Sticky substance on dash

    Default Sticky substance on dash

I recently sold a door and fenders to a buddy in Plano. He has a '91 BRG car. He told me that the dash has a sticky substance on it and it can't be removed.

Does anyone know what might cause this or what it might be?

I haven't seen the dash, so I don't know how to describe it. He told me that it is on the upper/ middle section of the dash, above the dash pad and the defrost vent area.

^^ That's just wrong... why would you be doing that while driving?

    Actually, why not?

I have the same sticky stuff on my dash too, but mostly on the gauge hood. Feels like the finish was in the sun too long and started getting icky... I've tried taking it off but it's weird, almost like roofing tar.

Sounds like a cleaner or a solvent has damaged the plastic.

I think your description is most likely what he is talking about. Very strange.

    No luck removing it?

Could it just be a collection of armor all or something similar and dirt? The only other stick stuff that I can think of is the goo that holds the plastic sheet to the back of the interior door panel.

I am stripping and repainting our tan dash right now.

I think its from having a car detailed, and happens to many Tan/Red 90-93 dashes.

    Nah,

Get some MEK. It smells good and will remove the paint and melt the plastic at the same time.

I used Goo Gone. It ate that shit up like Bean at an All-You-Can-Eat night at Hooters.

Scrap off what you can with a plastic putty knife and Goo Gone will dissolve the rest and like Bean would need, get a couple of rolls of paper towels
    ...and across the line.
