Thread: Rain leaks from window adjustment?

  1. #1

Default Rain leaks from window adjustment?

My drivers side window started leaking since I replaced the door with Ted the Red last time. Water is seeping from the top seal and then down the top of the glass. I know there's an adjustment but I don't have the slightest idea of what I need to do to make it seal better. Input is appreciated. It's a 93 NA with power windows if that makes a difference.

I think you can adjust the nylon "bump stops" that are attached to the window. You'll have to get the door panel off and roll the window down some to get to them. They look like hollow rollers, but their only purpose is to limit the window's travel at the top (that's my theory, at least). Loosen those (I think there are 2) and see if that allows you to roll your window up any further, then tighten them back down.

Of course, there may be a top adjustment I don't know about. I know mine sometimes leaks through where the window gasket splits to allow the top to fold back. I can slide those pieces back together and stop the leak till the next time I cycle the top down and up again.

    Hope that helps...

I do remember the window stoppers and may try and adjust that. I can get the door panel off in about 2 minutes and there's a rattle in there I need to look at anyways. I'll try that first. I do know there seem to be some screws somewhere in the top that you can adjust, I just don't know how to adjust them and what they do.

Yuu can also adjust the seals at the top to press against the glass better.

I did this on mine, got it from the pointy board. Get some of that tubular insulation for filling in voids around windows 3/8" or 1/2" iirc. Cut a slit in the end of the rubber (it's hollow) and snake it through. This adds tension to the seal and pushes it against the glass better.

There are 2 screws holding that seal in place. Loosen them and you can move the seal back & forth to adjust.

    Did it work?

The new Miata I just bought has a leaky drivers side near the drivers left knee.

Check the seals down the side of the door where it meets the windshield and make sure the top latch isn't adjusted too tight on the driver's side corner. If it is the seal will leak.

Well I think it is the seal itself.

Here are some photos and a video.

    Thanks for the pics!

I can see a huge difference comparing it to a complete piece.

Is the dealer the best place to get a piece like this? I cant see it being more than $20 or so.

The video shows a good stream... the floorboards are still wet from Friday and Saturdays rain... nice and musty.

My seal is fine the glass just doesn't go up far enough into the seal so there's a very small gap there. I'll most likely just take the door apart and re-set the window stop

I did the same thing to mine when I pulled the window out the first time. I have a new gasket waiting to be installed when I have the time (it's kind of a PITA, mainly tedious, b/c it actually wraps all the way around the outside of the door and pokes down in the front window track). Replacing that gasket should fix your leak. Unfortunately, you can only get it at the dealer, and it's about $105.

Wow... I guess it beats having a musty car that gets my pant leg wet everytime I drive.

Any dealers give large discounts for internet orders?

In the VW world there is a dealer (Auburn VW) that has an internet department that sells parts at a huge discount to folks out of state.

Last part I bought from them was an Pre-Cat 02 Sensor at $66... local dealer wanted $124.

Trussville is a popular internet dealer. Go to Miata.net and click on 'Marketplace' for other options.

    I think for the '99 the p/n is :

    Weatherstrip Assy, Door R NC10-58-760F
    Weatherstrip Assy, Door L NC10-59-760F

    Source - http://www.miata.net/garage/90-99Par...n_guidepdf.pdf

I'll check the old recipts on our '02 we had the drivers side door trim replaced under waranty since the seal was broke.

I assume this is for a '99... Rosenthal Mazda has some pretty good prices listed for both NA and NB parts (but I wonder why the hell the NB part is $20 cheaper???):

    NA weatherstrip - $92.95

    NB weatherstrip - $72.95

I've had good luck with Brian at Town North. I think once you figure in shipping from Rosenthal, then buying local looks like a pretty good deal. You might even get him to match the price outright. I got lazy and didn't look it up before I bought, but I didn't do too badly (I just looked it up, and I paid $100+tax for the NA part)...

    Thanks guys!

They list it at $95.95 and had one so I am having them hold it.

To confirm Left Side is Drivers Side?

I just realized I did a pretty big thread jack move.
