We just got ours as well, and it went down slightly this year. Of course, that doesn't make it any easier to cough up such a big chunk of change every January.![]()

I was originally told I didn't have to do anything for that when I bought the house, but looking HERE it appears that the mailing address thing may have messed that up for my house...
Ugh, it just gets more complicated!

Definitely. I'm suprised your realtor or mortgage broker didn't mention it to you.Originally Posted by rx7gslse
The homestead exemption is like a free - and often sizeable - deduction on your property taxes.

well, when I moved in they didn't even knwo what mailing address I was going to have, let alone school district...
but I found the form.. Looks like It's easy....
do you have to do thsi every year, or once?
I believe you're only able to apply for the exemption after a full calender year of owning the house.
I may be wrong.
have to be living in the house Jan 1 of that year according to TADOriginally Posted by Treibenschnell
Eitherway.. I've been here like a year and a month.

My parents briefly thought about doing that on their property in Colleyville, but when they looked into it you needed to have something like 6 head of cattle to qualify.Originally Posted by channelmaniac

Get the homestead exemption well worth the effort!
More information : http://www.window.state.tx.us/taxinf...x/exmptns.htmlQ: Do I, as a homeowner, get a tax break from property taxes?
A: You may apply for homestead exemptions on your principal residence. Homestead exemptions remove part of your home's value from taxation, so they lower taxes. For example, your home is appraised at $50,000, and you qualify for a $15,000 exemption, you will pay taxes on the home as if it was worth only $35,000.
