Thread: NB Headlights

    Question NB Headlights

Well since I'm headed out pre dawn to run to run an Autocross at collage station,(what the heck is the matter with me!) and I have a history of running stuff over in the dark.

I was thinking that maybe a new set of bulbs may illuminate the road better so at least I can make a positive identification on what I squashed and/or ran over.

You kids have any recommendations the bulbs are for my '99!

    TIA

Sylvania siverstars (Ultras if you can find them) should be a slight improvement over the stock halogens. Just look for them at any auto store.

Whatever you do, steer clear of really blue tinted bulbs. The silverstars have a slight tinting to them, but it's not a HID wannabe bulb. There are also the Sylvania Xtra vision bulbs that have a higher output than standard halogens.

One more suggestion: the GE Nighthawk. I've never used these but I've heard they are good and I think you can find them at Wally World.

BTW, are aftermarket HID kits that have plug and play installation legal in stock class cars. Nothing beats true HID lights.

The prices keep getting better and I've seen kits as low as $75 shipped.

HID's on a car that moves maybe 3 to 4 times a month seems silly to me.

I'll look around and see if I can fine the Silverstar HD's or the GE Nighthawks.

Honestly being a TCB stay away from the silver stars. I had two sets go out on me within 6-9 months. And at 20 or more a set that is not a long life. I have had the same set of normal bulbs that cost $7 for 4 years or so. Also without projector lamps I would stay away from HID lights. Our headlight housings are not designed for HID lights, so basically you are going to be blinding everyone coming at you, and not really seeing an improvement.

It will take POS 4 or more years to burn out the Silverstar.

I agree, the Silverstar has very short life and not for the daily driver. I buy my TCB bulbs from Powerbulb in UK. With the dollar so weak, it may no longer the TCB deal anymore.

I have had Silverstars in the 93LE for several years, no problem.
I had Hella 55/100, in before and blew both within a year.
I like the Silverstars, but mine are in Hella E-code housings.

Majik makes a good point. I had to get projector housings for both the M3 and the wife's GTI. The new Miata and RX-8 both come with projectors with a very focused beam.

I've had good luck with the Silverstars and PIAA superwhites in the past. While other people have had them burn out quickly, I haven't had any problems.

Get projectors from the later Nb's. That'll help more than bulb and look better too.

That's interesting, I just had to replace one on my NA a few days ago and I've only had them for about that amount of time (6ish months). Might need to change to something different.

The light was about the same as what it was as far as color, I didn't buy Miatamoto Brand™ blue bling bling headlights.

Seemed to be a touch brighter and light up the road a bit more than the OEM's so I guess it was a worthwhile expenditure.
