Thread: What would you do? (Road rage)

  1. #1

Default What would you do? (Road rage)

    Hypothetical question.

I see a lot of road rage nowadays and I'm curious as to what you would do in this situation.

You're on the freeway, doing the speed limit, in the right lane. You're being passed by the faster drivers.

Then, without warning, a young "hood" type speeds up to your rear end, to within one or two feet of your bumper, and sits there. Then lays on his horn with an angry look on his face. In a beater.

And just stays there. Right on your bumper. Honking. When he could easily go by.

Would you ignore it? Do something? Get in the left lane and leave him in the dust? Wave him by? Flip him off? Call the cops (why?)?

Odd question, I know, but I have a very, very quick temper, but I'm also very quick to cool down. I'm just curious as to what the rest of you would do.

Slam on the brake and say to the cop you were avoiding a near accident ahead of you when he rear ended you.

That or start slowing down to 20 mph. He'll get off your ass. Then when he starts trying to throw the beer bottles at your car and keeps on your side, start swerving back and forth in the lane a little bit to make sure he notices(especially let him start watching your hands) and then do a pit stop maneuver(jerk your hands to the left or right but not actually touching the steering wheel).

Glad I'm not the only one who likes this idea (but only in extreme situations).

Oh wow, that was you? I remember that thread but I didn't realize it happened to you, LOL!

Not smart in a Miata, there tough in front but pretty weak in rear.

Also if there is a witness, that says you just hit the brakes, you will be guilty of Road Rage.

Ill let off, to encourage them to go around, but not many cars can out brake a Miata.

Never tailgate a car that can outbrake you!

I like to lock up my fronts just for a moment to generate some tire smoke. They usually get the hint. If i'm in any other car then I just do something to get out of the way.

I find that if I tap the brakes just hard enough to make the ass end of the car hop up a little, that usually freaks them out just enough for me to put a little distance between me and them... but I usually don't have any problems.

That's what good performance pads and a well adjusted parking brake is for!

Not sure what I would do in that instance. I'm usually pretty calm with road rage. Ya never know who may have a gun...such as myself!

I find that putting my hazards on for tailgaters gets them to move around me or back off without much fuss.

Good news is that I was in the Integra, not the Miata

Bad news is that there's a few new cracks in the paint on the rear bumper. No damage though.

After hitting me he floored it and passed me on the shoulder, then took off weaving through traffic. The last time I saw him was about 3 minutes later and he was surrounded by state troopers.

Don't mess with someone who has an uglier car than you... and a cell phone.

That was one of my moments when I just sighed to myself and said "screw this, I'm not putting up with it right now"... I've dealt calmly with hundreds of angry drivers and I just got tired of it. Probably a bad decision, but it felt gooooood. Especially standing on the brake pedal so hard the ABS kicked on.

Oh well. I need to repaint my rear bumper anyway.

My daily commute takes me onto county roads. In the past 10 years or so I've almost hit a Deer 5-7 times, cows 10-15 times, a couple of horses and countless other critters. My total "kill" list includes two dogs and probably about 10 or so squirrels, rabbits, skunks, I would rather hit a critter than to swerve and loose control wreck. A deer may weigh a couple of hundred pounds, but a 1,200 pounds horse or a bigger cow/bull, that can kill you.

Having said all that, I always drive no faster that I can stop. On two hills that drops to 45 mph in day light and dry conditions. At night I do not out drive my lights. People will tail gate like mad. I don't care, there are plenty of areas to pass. By driving slow my travel time only increases by 5 minutes at the most. And thats fine by me.

Hmm what is decent? Are we talking about your decent or my decent? I'm just curious because I don't want to offend anyone else's decent...

You should've let those cops know he did a hit & run on you.

I have a dent in my rear quarter panel on the S2000 after getting hit by something thrown by a drunk and his pal in a tow truck on the 635 last month.

With my temper sometimes, this guy was seriously lucky dispatch was completely useless when he tried to run me into a barrier, and is even luckier he's still waterproof after hitting my car with something.

I really want to mount a couple of cameras with audio around the car to catch this kind of crap (and the occasional harassing cop) with proof.

I did, but I also told them I didn't want to press charges and just didn't want to get into it. I was tired and wanted to get home. But the way they were onto him, I think they nailed him for speeding at least.

I like the brake idea. I normally drive around in my RAM 3500 or my old Jeep CJ. Either one will tear the crap out of whatever rear ended me without incuring a lot of damage.
