Thread: Vehicle classification question

    Default Vehicle classification question

Going through the rules I need some help. The mods I have done to the car so far are easy to find except 1. The FM Butterfly brace.. What class would that put the car into?

Edit: Nevermind, the only class that is allowed is Prepared. Talk about never being competative. LOL

I think you're in at least street prepared with that brace, bummer. The problem with SCCA is that all the rules are very strict and to the T. I'd advise you to leave the car as is and run with some of the other local clubs. More runs, friendly people and way less time corner working plus looser classing rules so you can still be competitive in your class. For instance S2000 club events groups all Miatas together regardless of mods (except race tires). BMW club classes all cars with a 2.0L or smaller engine on street tires so you'll race against other Miatas, Civics, Neons, MR2's etc.

Don't forget you get to play in Novice for your first season in SCCA and Equipe Rapide. You will have a Prepared PAX but you'd be running against the other "newbies".

Just run what you brung for now. If you like it and you want to get into a competitive class, then cross that bridge later. For example, use your car at S2000, BMW, and PCA events and pick up a co-drive in a class-competitive car for SCCA and ER events. I know a guy who drives a Lotus that might want a co-drive if they will help haul tires. Most Miata guys are willing to allow a co-drive for a few bucks -- sometimes free for a one-time thing.

Anyway, for now, just worry about getting yourself good. The car can come later.

Locally (regionally), the rules are negotiable. Divisional, National Tours and National Finals are not. Talk to the other competetors in your class about your mods, they very likely would not mind a few mods in the beginning.

Last year I did that. When we started the year, my car had the wrong size wheels, a strut tower brace and the timing was out of factory spec. All the guys in E stock were OK with me running there instead of CSP. By the time we did the divisional in Fort Worth, my car was up to snuff.

Even with the mods, I finished DFL almost every time. With every thing correct, I finished DFL almost every time, even last Sunday. But, I'm just about the fastest last place finisher at the event, I was 47th in PAX and 65th in raw time, out of 152 timed drivers. And still DFL in ES!

With your NA, there are not any easy classes. GerryT in ES, Mark52 in CSP, Ken O in SM2. Your know, D Prepared kinda looks good.

If you were as slow as me, you wouldn't be afraid either.

The butterfly brace bumps you out of CSP, but like others have said I don't think anybody would complain if you ran Novice CSP. The PAX index is horrible so you'd be fight an uphill battle anyway.

Like jrj512 said, don't worry about classing and just go run the car. You'd be in other Japanese for PCA, X class in BMWCCA, and Miata with NTS2K.

I may have met him. That is a nice car and I would be afraid I would do something stupid with it and then have to pay to fix it.
