Thread: A Miata First?

    Default A Miata First?

So... I pulled into the Parkit Market on the way to my friend's house to watch the Mavs game tonight - top down, Molly the Pit Bassett riding shotgun. As I get out this guy walks by, looks down, and says "What IS that?"

    Naturally, I reply "That's a Pit Bassett."

He says, "No dude... what kind of CAR is that?" At which point Molly looks clearly miffed, as she feels that she is very special.

    "Um... a Miata?"

"Holy shit, you're right! Nice, dude... is it new?"

    "Eh... it's a '94."

"You're shitting me... that thing is, like, 22 years old! Dude, that thing is sweet!"

"Well, thanks, stranger!" (I didn't really call him Stranger, but I did have to correct his math skillz... you get the idea)

Still, it kinda made me feel proud - good times...

(BTW, I finally sacked up a couple of weeks ago and scraped my GOLD "Miata" badge off the rear of the car... with a 3" lock-back Buck knife, a thumb-roll for the foam sticky, and a little fine compound for final cleanup - didn't scratch a thing! So perhaps that led to his confusion...)

I've had Fiat, Porsche, and a few other guesses (I think even a Jag was thrown in there once).

LOL I've never had a single comment on my Miata except on the red interior.

He said he graduated HS in '87 (he was that random dude that strikes up a conversation and then won't shut up)... so that puts him at, what, almost 40???

    I'm guessing he's not a CPA.

I actually don't know exactly what she is, but "Pit Bassett" is probably not far off.

She's a great traveller, but she prefers a cushier ride than the Miata offers (she's very picky ).

She looks more "houndy" in that pic... but when she opens her jaws, squints her eyes and lays her ears back, it's a pretty good Pit impression.

I could see a Miata being mistaken for a Fiat Spider, or an old Triumph, or a Lotus Elan. The first gen in particular was heavily inspired by those old European sportscars. I could even slightly understand mistaking it for a Porsche 914.

    But a Viper?
