Thread: Las Vegas!

    Question Las Vegas!

I need to go to Vegas next month for a machine tool show.

Where is a decent (but TCB appoved) place to stay?

    Is the Luxor decent?

    TIA!

I have been to Vegas several times for work. Thoughts on places I can recall staying at, from worst to best:

MGM Grand- Small room, 30+ minute walk from room to parking garage, horrible traffic around the hotel.

The Golden Nugget- Old hotel on Fremont Street. Nice, but felt like a place for old people. If you pulled up in your 'lac, you would be treated like royalty.

Ballys- OK. Don't really have any strong memories of it, positive or negative.

Casino Royal- If you are a Star Trek NG fan, it is kind of cool to know you once stayed at the Casino Royal. The hotel isn't much... kind of like a Motel 6 style 2 story thing behind the Casino, but it was very clean, the people were nice, and it is one of the only cheap but clean places on the Strip. If you want to be on the strip, but retain TCB status, it is a good choice.

The Rio- If in the budget, this is my favorite. Every room in the place is a suite and the help is easy on the eyes. It is located on the other side of the freeway from the strip, which I found to be a big Plus. They had free buses taking you to the strip every few minutes, but if you wanted to drive somewhere other than the strip, you don't have to deal with the traffic. If you get a upper floor room on the strip side of the hotel, you get an incredible view.

Had no problems with my stay at Bally's in May, connected to Paris via corridor and the price was very reasonable

I stayed in one of those suites places (like Homewood or whatever Marriott calls theirs)one block from The Strip and loved it. I would avoid The Strip while driving because I was on a street running parrallel to it and I could walk to The Strip if I wanted. I would do that again.

I think Onething has some good contacts in case you need some pleasurable company in the evenings.

Just got back last night from a 4 day vacation in Vegas. We stayed at the Stratosphere. Price for room was about $40 a night. Room was clean. Probably like similar to a Best Western but a little nicer. You can travel any where you want via bus pass on the Deuce, Mat, Cat etc., for $5/24 hr pass. The Stratosphere has the Top of the World restaurant where you could take your GF. It is not TCB, though. Expect Del Frisco type prices. You pay for the ambience because the restaurant will rotate one revolution every 120 minutes. You get to see the whole city of Vegas. There is also a bar above the restaurant. You can even go on top and see Vegas and not pay for dinner. We may still have a pass that was given to us for the top. Let me know if you are interested.

Luxor is better than decent, however, your OP asked about TCB approved. I looked at the Luxor. Did not find TCB approved rates...

It is nice to hear that the Stratosphere's hotel has improved. I was there 13 years ago right before construction was done. The hotel and part of the casino was open. I was looking for a TCB room for my wife and I and stopped in there and checked in. We were in the room for less than 2 minutes and quickly returned to the front desk to get a refund. The working girl divot in the bed and cigarette floating in the toilet were curiously left out of the room pictures at the front desk. That was the night that we ended up at the Casino Royal which was 1000% better.

This should suit your price range.

So, I show this to the and her only response is, "Are you gonna give me some money to play with?" Sheesh. I get no respect. Perhaps I can get you two some tickets to a show.

Can't recommend any TCB options, but I can recommend avoiding the Flamingo. I just got back from a business trip in Vegas last night, and I wasn't impressed with the Flamingo at all. It just seemed very tired and seedy. Not that it was my choice - the company had an events coordinator book a block of rooms for a convention.

I did find a cool bar, though. The Ghost Bar on the 55th floor of the Palms has a glass-walled outside patio that has some amazing views of the city. Best part of the trip was sitting outside 600 feet above the city, sipping 30-year old single malt on someone else's expense account.
