Well, I have finally upgraded my wheels and tires to something more adequate for my power goals.
The wheels are Gram Lights 57S 17X7.5 40mm offset.
The tires are 235-40-17 Toyo RA-1.
Yes, they are taller than I wanted, but I had them on hand, so I used them. I'll be using a different size later, but they clearance pretty well with some fender pulling/rolling.
Wealth, power, and experience are apparently not enough to save us from social influences. Groupthink, as described by I.L.Janis, is the tendency for group members to reach a consensus opinion, even if that decision is downright stupid (Janis 1982).
What does the rim and tire weigh?

Probably around 17 to 18 lbs for the rims alone, looking at the tirerack.
Add to that 24 lbs for the tire acccording to edge racing, you have about 41lbs a piece.
