How much does it cost to have a car inspected by a Mechanic?

I've never actually taken a used car I've purchased to a mechanic to get checked out prior to buying. How much does that cost and where is a good place to get a used Miata looked at?

P.S. - how much does it cost to replace a clutch in an NA miata?
