Apparently, tonight is the 2009 Dallas Cannonball.
What's that mean? It means a lot of idiots with too much free time and not enough sense to take it to the track will be tearing up the freeways of DFW tonight.
Here's their planned route. What an exciting drive:

I love how they say "Remember the Cannonball is not a race, its just a social event for people that like to drive", yet they have a 150 mile route and say that they expect the drive to take about 1 1/2 hours.![]()
Well, if you are doing what you should be doing, checking your mirrors and such, it shouldn't be a problem. It's inattention that is the problem, not speed, in my opinion.
Wealth, power, and experience are apparently not enough to save us from social influences. Groupthink, as described by I.L.Janis, is the tendency for group members to reach a consensus opinion, even if that decision is downright stupid (Janis 1982).

Bull Shit!
We nearly got run over by 2 of these dipshits going about 120 on 635, lane changing.
If they had been running the speed lane not so big of a deal.
I was doing 80 and they popped into my mirror after crossing 3 lanes.
Another microsecond and I would have been passing slower traffic.
Awareness doesn't factor when there lane changing from the slow lane to the speed lane and back, at twice the speed limit.

^^ +1. If these douchebag morons wouldn't drive like frikkin Fast & Furious characters they'd be less of a pain... as it is all they're doing is putting other people in danger for absolutely no reason.

Right on!! People need to pay more attention ALL the time REGARDLESS!! People driving in the passing lane and not passing have control issues - toooooooooooooooooooo many on the street these days have CONTROL issues - they want it and want to control YOU. Again - regardless of what was going on with this thing.

I can't believe people actually think that. I am a very attentive driver. I am always checking my mirrors and I look far ahead. However and I can tell you about many times on 183 in Fort Worth where there are several hills that can shorten site distances, I have had motorcycles blow by me that I never saw until they were 50 feet behind me and closing at 60-80mph. I agree to a point that in normal driving inattention causes more problems than speed when you are within the speed limit or close to it. But going double the speed limit on the highway is a problem. Take it to the track.
I wonder if there were any arests out there.
Do they really double the speed limit? I would think the cops would be standing by just waiting to catch some of these folks. Afterall - the day and time is posted on a public forum. Especially Texas State Troopers...they can cross county & city lines.
As for motorcycles - it's usually sport bikes that do that. Not a day goes by that I don't see a sport bike whipping in and out of traffic.
Just the other morning I didn't turn into traffic so the bike behind me came up beside me - I didn't see him pull up beside me and almost hit him...sadly that attitude will catch up to them sooner or later.
Looking at their site, they had a map that took them approximately 150 miles, and they expected it to take 1 1/2 hours. That by itself is a 100 mph average, but then you need to consider that both their start and finish points are on surface streets, several stoplights from the freeways. The slower start and finish means that the average speed on the freeway needs to go up well over 100 mph. So yes, I think that double the speed limit was likely happening at some points.
That's a good question; with the map and expected speeds publicly posted on the web, where was law enforcement?I'd think they would've been waiting at every city limit.
Hmm what is decent? Are we talking about your decent or my decent? I'm just curious because I don't want to offend anyone else's decent...
These Cannonballers sound like a real sack of dicks. What kind of an idiot thinks it's okay (or fun) to haul ass on busy city interstates when there's lots of traffic out. I don't care how careful you are about checking your mirrors and watching out for these dipshits, they're closing on you so fast that they'll be right up on you before you see them. What a bunch of douchebags... 'Splain to me again why any of you would take up for them???
Any update on this? Any arrests? Any wrecks?
